Are You Feeling Tired?

We’ve all had days when we felt weary. Everything takes longer because we are not operating on all cylinders. There can be many reasons for this — poor sleep, too much to do, eating the wrong foods, too many worries, etc.
One thing that results when fatigue invades our lives is that we lose our joy. In the absence of joy, weakness seeps in and robs us of strength. It can be a vicious circle and we are not sure which comes first — the chicken or the egg?
Nehemiah, a Jew who was a high official overseeing the rebuilding of the wall for the protection of Jerusalem, saw that the people were weary from all their hard work. They also experienced discouragement because not only were they physically tired, but there was opposition to Nehemiah’s plan. In addition to being physically tired, they also became spiritually and emotionally worn out. Nehemiah had a remedy for them. He instructed them to “Celebrate!” (Nehemiah 8:10).
So how do we
do that when we are already tired and we don’t feel like celebrating? I discovered that it is helpful to look back on my day and recall three things that brought me joy. (I say “three things” because if forces me to puts some effort into it.) I don’t know about you but even getting a parking place at 4:00 p.m. at the grocery store puts a smile on my face. Or maybe I have a question bugging me and the answer quickly enters my thoughts. Joy also comes when a dreaded responsibility removed from my calendar. At times like this you’ll hear me say, “Thank You, God! Thank You, God — You are so good to me!”
In Nehemiah 8:10 it says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength!” When we choose to recall our blessings, we feel invigorated with the joy of experiencing the goodness of God.
So when you feel yourself sliding down the slippery slope of emotional stress leading to weariness, take a few minutes to give thanks to God. Be sure to take note of how much better you feel! That’s how you will know it really works!!
