In Romans 7:15, Paul is lamenting over the wrong choices that he is repeatedly making, even though he knows better. Ever been there? I think we all have. He says—
“I don’t understand myself at all,
for I really want to do what is right, but I can’t.
I do what I don’t want to — what I hate…”

When I first read Paul’s account forty years ago, I remember saying, “That’s me! I know exactly what Paul is saying!”
I mention it today because I was caught in the trap of overeating. I knew it was wrong, but I didn’t know how to get it stopped.
Ever since I was a little girl, I found my comfort in food. Whenever I felt afraid or alone, I would eat more food than my body needed. As a result, I was a pudgy toddler who became an overweight teen, which at that time was socially unacceptable.
As a young child, I began creating a habit pattern that developed into a lifestyle of running to food for my security. Ironically, it was that habit that created
the insecurity.
In 1982, when I gave my heart to the Lord, a war between right and wrong began to rage inside my soul. Shortly after that, I read about Paul’s dilemma, and it was like I had written these verses myself.
Romans 7 ends with a question — “Who will free me from my slavery to this deadly lower nature?”
Thankfully our loving, redemptive God gave a straight-forward answer.
“Thank God!
It has been done by Jesus Christ our Lord.
He has set me free.”

If we truly want more of God in our lives, we have to be willing to make room for Him. And that’s not always easy. But we’re not expected to do it alone.
