A WELCOMED CHANGE
Maybe you have heard the phrase--
“Everywhere you go, there you are.”
I take this to mean that wherever I go, I keep showing up — with my attitudes, my ideas, my mindsets, my habits…. Get the picture?
Recently I wrote a blog post about decluttering, which tends to be an after-Christmas phenomenon. I am three weeks into my own decluttering process. I am making headway, but I am far from done since I decided to tackle every room, every closet, and every drawer in my house, including the garage.
Let's transfer the word “declutter” over into what we carry around in our heads, speak out our mouths, and act out of our hearts during the course of a day. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves these questions, How do I sound to God? Am I emanating the character of Christ, or are my thoughts laced with pride, judgementalism, anger, or fear? Maybe it’s time to rid ourselves of the things that are highjacking our success.
Hang on! Please don’t stop reading!
In our defense, we may not even be aware of these things. Maybe they are so familiar to us that they become unrecognizable.
In the midst of what was just an ordinary day, I had a thought that I knew was not mine. It caused me to stop what I was doing. It was a gentle thought but one that I should consider. The Holy Spirit of God pointed out something in me that was not representing Him well. Before this moment, I had no idea that my behavior was questionable.
Sandwiched between the first and last lines of "The 30-Second Prayer," are the words, “cause me to think the way You think.”
Father, I commit this day to You.
Cause me to think the way You think—
So I know what to do.
When we pray these eight words, we are asking God to change the way we think. We have given God permission to insert His words into our thoughts. If we are truly submitted to God— committing everything to Him — we should welcome God’s counsel and be willing to get rid of the things that are un-Christ-like in our lives. After all, God is just doing what we asked Him to do. When our thoughts align with His will, we will reflect the character of Christ. That is a picture of true, Biblical success.
[I will let you know how my home “decluttering” project is going. So far each step leads me to more peace and more freedom because there is less to manage!]
