Day 17—Gratitude 2.0

Is it time to take “Gratitude” to the next level?? Yesterday in the Omaha area we received five inches of the most beautiful snow. It was beautiful yesterday but today it is just a reminder that we can’t walk around our yards or sit on our patios. The day could lend itself to feeling a bit trapped in our homes. On Day 11, I wrote about not dreading what is in front of us but instead looking beyond to what lies ahead. Next week it’s supposed to be in the seventies so that’s what I am choosing to think about.
The Bible gives us some good advice:
….you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating in things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.
Philippians 4:8-9 The Message (MSG)
This morning as I was getting ready, I noticed that my hair was looking a little ragged. The salons are closed and I had to miss this month’s hair appointment. As the negative thoughts began to formulate in my mind, another thought came flooding in. I have a friend who is undergoing chemotherapy and is losing her hair. I was humbled at this reminder and immediately began to thank God for what I had.
We may feel cooped up in our homes but some are under the stress of not being able to make their rent or mortgage payment this month.
We might feel like we are missing out on life—-proms, graduations, weddings, and vacations to name a few, but due to social-distancing some have had to miss the funerals of their loved ones.
On Day 9, I shared my “Number One Survival Solution”—writing in a Gratitude Journal every night before bed. Some days were harder than others but I never let myself off the hook. It seemed like when I went to bed with a thankful heart, I would wake up with an expectation of something good happening the next day. I got in that rhythm for 365 days and it has become apart of my thought process. Oh, there are days that I have to remind myself—like today—but it doesn’t take much to get in the right frame of mind.

Beginning the day with God puts us in a posture of surrender. We release our plans, seek His wisdom, and step into the peace that comes from trusting His direction.
