If I were going to give today’s post a sub-title, I would call it “Excuses—And Why We Love Them.”
We love them because they soothe the soul. Our excuses—and we all have them—originate in the thoughts. Or do they originate in our emotions? It’s kind of like, which came first—then chicken or the egg? Why don’t we leave that for another time and realize for the sake of our discussion that it doesn’t matter. Let’s just say that excuses begin in our souls.
Our souls are the “house” within each of us where our thoughts, emotions, and choices live. If we have committed our day to God and asked Him to cause our thoughts to become (change and become) agreeable to His will, then we will be established and find success. That success is not because of us but because we have allowed God to lead us.
Okay, back to “excuses.” If we allow our made up excuses—that originate in our souls—to lead us, we will likely end the day in regrets. On the other hand, if we recognize them for what they are—manmade justifications—we might be more apt to counter them by choosing the right things.
Here is one of my excuses. “I will exercise later today.” Here is another. “It’s chilly out today. I can have another cup of coffee.” I am talking about the one after
my daily quota of caffeine!
I have found a remedy for my excuses, and it works whenever
I choose to use it. That remedy is to speak my justification out loud so I can hear how stupid it sounds with my own ears. That usually does it!!
If our excuses sound ridiculous to us, can you imagine what God thinks about them? He probably shakes His head when He hears it. Thankfully the Bible says—
So now there is no condemnation for
those who belong to Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1 (NLT)
God is like any well-meaning father who understands our weaknesses and always believes that we will do better next time. But don’t be surprised if the next time you voice your excuse, He replies with this question:
How’s that working for you, ______?

If we truly want more of God in our lives, we have to be willing to make room for Him. And that’s not always easy. But we’re not expected to do it alone.
