Several years ago, this God-thought came into my mind:
“I will be to you as personal as you want Me to be.”
My immediate response was that I wanted Him to be personal with me. I desired all the advice, the direction, and even correction that He wanted me to have.
Fast-forward to the present. After saying “yes” to God, I realized that I should prepare my heart to receive the wisdom I was asking for. What I learned was more practical than I realized — so stick with me here!
First of all, I started having a meeting with God at the beginning of each day. I chose a time and a place — and I did my best to show up. This time was ours, and I wanted to be intentional about being present.
At this “meeting,” I began by reading my morning devotional. Each morning I wrote what I learned in a journal. Day-after-day, I had a meeting with God, and each day I learned something new.
It was then that I discovered I could ask God questions and expect that He would give me answers as I progressed through the day. This realization brought me to a new understanding of the word “personal.”
One morning I ran across the scripture in Proverbs 16:3 (AMPC). It’s the one I talk so much about because it is so near and dear to my heart.
Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him;
He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and]
so shall your plans be established and succeed.
As time went on, I devised what I call a “30 Second Prayer.” It goes like this:
Father, I commit this day to You.
Cause my thoughts to agree with Your will—
So I know what to do!
This powerful little prayer changes everything! What was once confusing and frustrating was straightened out by a thought or idea from God.
As we begin a new year, this would be a great time to fire up our intentionality and make this a year of personal meetings with God. Just think about what we might learn and experience in the next eleven months!

If we truly want more of God in our lives, we have to be willing to make room for Him. And that’s not always easy. But we’re not expected to do it alone. Sometimes we need to refresh the screen of our hearts to see clearly again. When we lay down our own plans and fully trust God, our vision begins to change. Beginning the day with God puts us in a posture of surrender. We release our plans, seek His wisdom, and step into the peace that comes from trusting His direction.
