DECLUTTERING 2.0
On January 13th, I wrote a blog post called "Time To Declutter". I talked about downsizing our time commitments and activities so we have more time to breathe. When we are overloaded, it is too easy to have an adverse reaction to even the tiniest bump in the road.
Today, I want to talk about decluttering our opinions. Many years ago, I received an early morning phone call from a gal that wanted my opinion on an ongoing issue that was transpiring in real-time. I was in a hurry to get to my job and told her that I would call her later. On the way to work, I asked God a mental question. "What am I going to say to her?" The answer came back very quickly. "Karol, you do not have to have an opinion about the issue."
What an epiphany! I absolutely do not have to have an opinion about that!
That revelation made me think about all the other things that I did not have an opinion about. Immediately, I felt lighter and freer. God went on to explain that my main responsibility was to stay in my own lane — that I had plenty to do to take care of myself. Besides, my opinion is only my opinion and it is more than likely not based on the facts. And even those facts are none of my business.
The Bible says —
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3: 5, 7 (NLT)
The Passion Translation says, "Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions."
I never saw myself as an overly opinionated person, but even the ones I did have were not necessary. You cannot imagine how this simplified my life. Even now, when I am with opinionated people, you’ll catch me looking around for a way to graciously exit the room. Why get involved or even listen to a conversation that stirs up our emotions and clutters up our thoughts? Instead, we can enjoy the peace and simplicity that God wants us to have. It’s the same kind of peace that we have when we declutter an overstuffed closet. Now when we open the door, rather than the contents falling out upon us, we enjoy the breathable space where all the unnecessary clutter used to be.
Now that’s "living the good life which God prearranged and made ready for us to live." Ephesians 2:10 AMPC.
